In a mediation, emotions can derail an agreement and ruin relationships.  When properly understood, however, emotions can help improve relationships and get the results parties want.  In Beyond Reason, the Harvard Negotiation Project clarifies the complicated world of emotions, highlighting five “core concerns” that motivate all of us.  With this understanding, mediators can learn how to use these core concerns to generate helpful emotions in themselves and in others.

When most of us mediate, we focus on three areas: what parties are doing, what they are thinking, and what they are feeling.  Over the past quarter-century the mediation field has developed frameworks and tools to help people reach agreements by working in all three of these domains.  The great wisdom traditions teach that the deepest opportunity for facilitating insight and change is by working in a fourth domain: the ground of being.  The Harvard Negotiation Insight Initiative and the Beyond Yes Process teach practitioners how to achieve mastery by moving from using three to using all four dimensions.
