The UIA is proud to present its first international seminar organised in Syria, jointly with the Syrian Bar Association.
Mediation enables parties to reach a solution to their dispute amongst themselves, a creative solution suited to their needs, a "WIN/WIN" situation that helps parties to a dispute to restore communication on a non-confrontational level, and at the same time saves considerable time and money. The Mediation part of the programme (Day 1) will be highly interactive, it will start off with a mock mediation followed by a “de-briefing”, and the panellists and “actors” will endeavour to actively involve the audience. Special emphasis will be given to ADR as a means for resolving disputes related to distribution contracts.
Day 2 will be dedicated to Arbitration as the preferred means for resolving international commercial disputes: business enterprises operating internationally and their advisors cannot afford to ignore this reality. The panellists will at first discuss the pitfalls of drafting arbitration clauses (since drafting an inadequate arbitration agreement has proven to result in a disaster when a dispute arises) and will address the issue of combining mediation and arbitration. The subsequent panels will address four of the most topical and critical issues relating to international arbitration: arbitration in the public sector, interim measures, the role of State Courts when confronted with arbitration agreements as well as setting aside proceedings and the enforcement of arbitral awards (in particular the role of public policy).
On all such issues experts of international arbitration will provide invaluable advice to those attending the seminar
The speakers and panellists are all top experts from the UIA and the Syrian Bar Association and the approach will be essentially practical, allowing for questions and debate. A CD-ROM with the presentations and additional material will complete the information offered to the participants.
This seminar will also allow participants to establish new valuable contacts as well as to visit beautiful sites and to experience the fascinating local culture.
Join us in Damascus: we look forward to welcoming you here!
